People matter
Employee engagement
Our employees are engaged and strongly committed to giving back to our communities. We empower them to be generous with both their time and resources to foster inclusive, healthy places in which to live and work.
Summer of Service
During this annual companywide volunteer event, employees take time out of their workday to volunteer alongside coworkers, managers and senior leaders.
The 2025 program offered 81 projects in partnership with 62 nonprofits in 19 states. Nearly 602 employees rolled up their sleeves to volunteer more than 2,088 hours building houses, planting vegetables for local food bank farms and everything in between. Since 2009, Symetra employees have volunteered more than 26,057 Summer of Service hours.
Summer of Service supports our annual 45% employee volunteering participation goal and helped us achieve 48% participation in 2025.
BOLD Program
Our BOLD (Board Orientation Leadership Development) program encourages employees to provide leadership and support to organizations in their communities by offering nonprofit leadership training and then matching program participants to nonprofit boards that align with their talents and interests. Nationally, employees currently serve on 26 traditional nonprofit boards and hold 10 leadership roles with civic organizations such as chambers of commerce and financial industry affiliated organizations.
Empowers Community Award
Stephanie Matilla was recognized as our 2025 Symetra Empowers Communities honoree for her commitment to giving back. In addition to volunteering for her local PTA, high school booster club, Little League and elementary school basketball team, Stephanie is a licensed foster parent. In 2025, she founded Ben’s Closet, a nonprofit that partners with local agencies to deliver essential items to children entering foster care. Stephanie has dedicated countless hours to initiatives that strengthen families, uplift children, and provide critical resources to those in need. Her efforts exemplify Symetra’s values of advocacy, empowerment and corporate social responsibility.
